Before we arrive in any city on vacation, I research the local restaurants. I’m a huge foodie. My husband is not, so 9 times out of 10 I get to pick our restaurants. He simply wants food and often can skip a meal unintentionally. How does one even “forget” to eat?!?! I don’t understand.
I am the opposite – I want to enjoy an experience, get lost in the ambiance, and enjoy my food. I also get really cranky (hangry) and light headed if I skip a meal, so there’s that.
When I was looking into Hot Springs, Arkansas restaurants for a quick one night stop, I found Superior Bathhouse Brewery. Breweries catch my attention often because they usually have a really relaxed atmosphere. More and more are starting to be family-friendly, so that’s a plus too for our family travels. I also like to visit breweries because while I don’t drink beer, my husband does. I was even more excited to find out the brewery was conveniently located directly across the street from our hotel, The Waters!
After getting checked into our hotel and spending some time on their beautiful rooftop, the four of us headed across the street to the brewery.
BATHHOUSE ROW
This area of Hot Springs is known as Bathhouse Row and it’s located in Hot Springs National Park. Hot Springs National park is known for it’s thermal water. Thermal water comes out of the ground around 144 degrees F and flows into pools. You can even touch the thermal water in the park!
If you’ve never heard of a bathhouse, let me fill you in. In the olden days when people did not have access to bathing facilities in their homes, they would use communal facilities. Sounds gross to me nowadays!
Today Bathhouse Row consists of eight buildings that were built in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Two of the bathhouses offer spa services where you can experience the thermal water for yourself! (The Buckstaff and The Quapaw) Others have been transformed into something completely different, but maintain the building’s structure.
Superior Bathhouse Brewery did just that – they are a brewery located in an old bathhouse on Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs. Superior is also “the only brewery in the world to make craft beer with thermal spring water straight from the source.” They are the first brewery to be located inside a U.S. National Park.
THE BREWERY
Superior Brewery is family-friendly and even has an event space.
There is a good variety of food on the menu. You can find anything from a soft pretzel to a hummus plate as an appetizer. The mains range from salads to burgers to sandwiches. The menu is seasonal, so it has changed since our visit.
One thing listed on the menu below that they still currently offer is the Honey Roasted Beet Salad. My daughter and I love beetroot! (I had beetroot regularly when we lived in Australia. It’s not that common in the States, so I tend to order it at a restaurant when I see it on the menu.). The beets were roasted perfectly and the sweetness from the honey was exactly what my taste buds wanted.
We also loved the Hummus Plate, Sweet Potato Sandwich, and Turkey Bacon Ranch Wrap. While these are not currently on the menu, keep an eye out for them when you visit.
The service was great. The brewery was pretty busy when we visited, but our waitress took great care of us. Our daughter loved the server’s colorful hair – many had purple, blue, or a combination of brightly colored hair.
As the sign below says, you can get beer to go! Bring a growler to fill with your favorite brew, or purchase a 32oz or 64oz growler at the brewery to fill.
If you’re keen, you can take a “Beer Bath” and sample all 18 beers on tap! The hubs wouldn’t have been able to function with 18 tastings, but this would be great for a group of friends.
Superior Bathhouse Brewery was a great find. We would visit again! We love supporting local restaurants. Is that something you do too?!
