The hubs and I had the chance to take a quick weekend trip to Southern California in February. We aim to take one of our kid-free getaways each year in the month of April, our anniversary month. We weren’t able to go in April this year, so we booked our trip for February. I am SO thankful we were able to enjoy this kid-free weekend before the craziness of the Corona virus hit. I’m currently daydreaming of the next time we are able to be kid free. Lord, may it be soon…

Here is what we fit in while we were in Cali!

Day 1

Napping on the plane – because no kids. I had every intention of reading a book, but leaving the house at 4am made me tired enough to be able to sleep on the plane.

La Jolla & San Diego Beaches Day Tripper Tour with Old Town Trolley Tours. We loved this tour and our guide, Susie. It was nice getting to actually hear the tour facts since we weren’t having to answer a million questions from our three kiddos. The tour left from Old Town San Diego at 10am, so we caught an Uber from our hotel to the meeting point in Old Town.

I loved seeing different neighborhoods along the way. We saw everything from mansions sprawled out to smaller houses stacked on top of one another (like Mission Beach, pictured below right.) Does anyone else Zillow neighborhoods when they’re on holidays?! I totally do. I was shocked to see how much a house equivalent to our size would be in Southern California! If we want to return to that beach life, we would move back to Queensland, Australia.

The trolley went from Old Town in San Diego to the cutest beach town, La Jolla. Along the way, there was a stop at the highest point in San Diego, Mount Soledad. It was a great stop – amazing views of the coastline, a war memorial, and a beautiful cross.

February is a quieter season and the day was overcast, which may have contributed to the half full trolley. We enjoyed the lower numbers as we were able to spread out on the trolley.

Once we arrived in La Jolla, we had about 3 hours to explore the cute beachside town. First, we walked down to Children’s Pool Beach and La Jolla Cove. The path along the ocean was perfect for a nice stroll with my man. If you bring young children here, I’d recommend a stroller. Fo sho. Our kiddos would have been throwing all the fits if they were there and we didn’t have a stroller.

The seals and sea lions were so fun to watch! Be mindful of the signs posted everywhere to keep your distance from them. They are wild animals!

We continued our walk to the Cave Store, which is a gift shop combined with a cave that goes down to the ocean! People have been going down the tunnel to the cave since 1903. There are 145 wooden steps, which are easy on the way down. Make sure you can get back up! If you are trained in toddler-chasing, like me, then you should be fine.

After the cave experience, we walked back up to the shops, boutiques, and cafe area to find a place to sit and read with an ocean view.

When our La Jolla time was over, we met the rest of the tour group at the trolley and rode back to Old Town, San Diego. We walked around the Old Town Market, and ended up at Old Town Mexican Cafe. After watching them make tortillas in in the window, we HAD to go test them out. And what’s a good tortilla without a delicious margarita to go with it?!

We caught an Uber back to our hotel so we could take an afternoon nap – because no kids. I got all dolled up while the hubs read on our balcony.

That night we went to the rooftop of Born & Raised, which is in Little Italy. I made a reservation beforehand, which I highly recommend. You can make a reservation for their downstairs dining area or their rooftop bar.

Day 2

The next morning I walked to a newly opened restaurant in Coronado, The Henry. I am a sucker for beautifully designed restaurants and cafes. This place did not disappoint. I went to pick up a chai and coffee for me and the hubs, but the second I arrived, I wished that we had planned to enjoy a meal here. Oh my cuteness.

That afternoon I surprised the hubs with a tour of the MLB stadium, Petco Park! I absolutely LOVE surprises, so I naturally surprise my family. All. The. Time. My husband is the opposite of me. He’s pretty chill most of the time and his reaction to said surprises are often underwhelming. Sometimes I’ll even prep him beforehand and say “Babe, I’ve been working so hard and put a lot of effort into this surprise, so PLEASE be excited….even if you have to fake it.” Ha. He’s a good sport and will usually go along with it.

We are both huge baseball fans – I have him and his family to thank for that. Even though this wasn’t Wrigley Field, (GO CUBS!!!) we still had a great time on the tour. The stadium had recently hosted Monster Jam, so they were prepping the field to get ready for opening day. Which sadly hasn’t happened yet.

After our tour, we went for drinks at Garage Kitchen + Bar. It was bumpin, so we didn’t stay too long. I’m I’d like to hear what my date is saying years old. The drinks were good though and the staff was friendly!

For dinner, we ate at the rooftop of Rustic Root in the Gaslamp Quarter. I highly recommend this place! The only downside was our table was right next to the bar and apparently people do not respect your personal bubble when they are drinking. The people watching is so fun, you’ll want to stay for awhile. For dinner, we shared the Veggie Board (yum!!) and the RR Burger. I can also vouch for the Winter Paradise cocktail. The downstairs and upstairs have separate menus, so check them out ahead of time!

After dinner, we went to a later than our bedtime but super worth it comedy show at Mad House Comedy Club. Going to comedy shows is one of our favorite date night activities. We love the variety when there are 5+ stand up comedians. The night we went, we were sat on the front row. I totally was freaking. I’m not a fan of getting picked on, so I was really nervous. It turned out just fine for us, but I felt for the poor couple next to us!!

Day 3

Our last day, was a chillax day. We slept in, read, laid on the beach, went for a walk, enjoyed happy hour drinks, and sat there silently enjoying the peace.

It was a quick and super relaxing, much needed, getaway from the munchkins. Shout out to my MIL for holding down our fort, and my mom & dad for helping with the littlest human.

Where is your favorite destination to get away from the kids for some R&R?! Let me know in the comment section!
